Unit Title: Hard Love by Ellen Wittlinger Day Title: Celebration Lesson Outcome: Students will be able to: o Celebrate the completion of their zines o Give and receive feedback on their zines o Reflect on the zine process and on individual pieces Standards: CE 1.2.4 - Assess strengths, weaknesses, and development as a writer by examining a collection of own writing. CE 2.3.2 - Read, view, and/or listen independently to a variety of fiction, nonfiction, and multimedia genres based on student interest and curiosity. CE 2.3.8 - Develop and apply personal, shared, and academic criteria to evaluate own and others' oral, written, and visual texts. Materials Needed: finished zines, writing utensils, large paper Launch: · Each student has a large piece of paper with his/her name and zine title on it. This is their comment sheet. · The students' zines are placed around the room. · Students skim/read/look through classmates' zines · Students must write a positive comment about every zine they read and initial their comment. · They have 30 minutes Learning Activity: · Snacks! · Student volunteers read/act out a piece from their zines · After 20 minutes have a 5 minute discussion break · After another 20 minutes have a 5 minute discussion break Assessment: Students will reflect on the zine process, their individual pieces, etc. § Did you enjoy creating a zine? § Do you feel you had enough in-class time to work on your zine? § What is your favorite piece? Why? § Do you feel your pieces worked well together? § What were some difficulties you had? § What are some changes the teacher could make for next year?
